a new life for restartxf ?

Hello everyone,
I have heard that the old variable restartxf is getting a new life with the introduction of HIST and OUT.nc files.
I have an anxious question about it :
Where can I find an up to date documentation about this variable and the associated files. I assume that the available documentation which states that " 'presently' is version 3.1" is obsolete...
Additional questions would be :
Would it work with _DEN files and not _WFK files ?
Does one have to rename the files before restarting ?
is it working after a crash of the code ? (someting which on my computer center happens more thah often unfortunatly)
All these questions (and some others of the same kind) are in fact contained in the first one...
Thanks very much in advance.
