Reciplocal space?

Hi everybody...
Why we use the reciprocal (k space) in our calculations and we don't use the real space?

Because in a periodic system, k is a good quantum number and therefore splits the problem into subspaces, which leads to greatly simplified calculations and computational speed-up.
