Abinit 6.8.1 problem compiling

Post by rosbaldeston » Wed Jul 27, 2011 6:38 pm

I've been trying to install this software for a while now and cannot seem to get anywhere with it.
I have gcc version 4.1.2 and compiling with gfortran breaks on make as it seems that it will not run f90 files for some reason that I cannot comprehend. g95 works, but only to an extent as it continually throws errors like:
g95 -ffree-form -g -ffree-line-length-huge -O3 -march=nocona -mmmx -msse -msse2 -mfpmath=sse -c wannier_lib.F90
wannier_lib.F90: In function ‘wannier_run__’:
wannier_lib.F90:369: warning: will never be executed

After running:
g95 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../../../abinit-6.8.1/./src/12_hide_mpi -I../.. -I../../src/incs -I../../../abinit-6.8.1/./src/incs -ffree-form -fmod=/home/clark/rosbaldeston/precompile/abinit/builddir/src/mods -I/home/clark/rosbaldeston/precompile/abinit/builddir/src/mods -O3 -march=nocona -mmmx -msse -msse2 -mfpmath=sse -g -ffree-line-length-huge -c -o m_xmpi.o ../../../abinit-6.8.1/./src/12_hide_mpi/m_xmpi.F90
And other similar commands it prints the following message many times.
Error: Can't open included file 'mpif.h'

I tried compiling with the following becuase one of the other topics here recommended it:
./configure --enable-mpi FC=g95 --with-mpi-level=1

I'm running this on a red hat box and all the software that the build requirements say is needed has been installed on the machine already and is actually later versions than is required.
Any idea on what I should use as compiling flags? I am guessing that is the only real issue but I really don't know. If there is any other info that I need to provide let me know.

Hi

Could you please provide the results of the 1st step of the configure script? (Where the script scans your system and checks if everything's alright before compiling)

It usually displays useful information.

Thanks.

I thought it would be some path not well defined but everything looks ok to me. Is that the entire log? Because usually there's another bunch of stuff about MPI at then end of the log.

Someone might help you better than I did ^^

 === Final remarks                                                          ===
 ==============================================================================

Summary of important options:

  * C compiler      : gnu version 4.1
  * Fortran compiler: g95 version 4.1
  * architecture    : intel xeon (64 bits)

  * debugging       : basic
  * optimizations   : standard

  * MPI    enabled  : yes
  * MPI-IO enabled  : yes
  * GPU    enabled  : no (none)

  * TRIO   flavor = netcdf-fallback+etsf_io-fallback
  * TIMER  flavor = abinit (libs: ignored)
  * LINALG flavor = netlib (libs: auto-detected)
  * FFT    flavor = none (libs: ignored)
  * MATH   flavor = none (libs: ignored)
  * DFT    flavor = libxc-fallback+atompaw-fallback+bigdft-fallback+wannier90-fallback

Configuration complete.
You may now type "make" to build ABINIT.
(or, on a SMP machine, "make mj4", or "make multi multi_nprocs=<n>")

Perhaps I should set up open-mpi and see if that works but then what would I use as the compiler flags?

checking whether MPI is usable... no
configure: WARNING: MPI support is broken!

You already have a problem here since MPI is not usable. Usually it is because the path to the MPI librairies is not correctly defined. If you have openMPI for instance, you can specify in the configure command:

Code: Select all

../configure --enable-mpi --with-mpi-prefix=/path/to/mpi/executable

It should use mpif90 to compile.

You may find the path to the MPI executable by echoing $PATH.

So I supply it with the path to the location of mpif90. I tried with mpich_intel first. But I am guessing that it isn't seeing the library or something. is there a flag like --with-mpi-lib or something where i could define that?

It didn't work with mpich_intel?

--with-mpi-prefix is the tag supposed to provide the path to both the executable (/bin) and the libraries (/lib)

No it didn't. I gave it the path. There isn't a /bin in the directory but all the executables are in there along with the lib/ directory. But when I call it for some reason it still used gfortran and gcc as the compilers rather than mpif90 and mpicc. It's strange. I thought maybe it was permissions so I ran it as root but to no avail

Then try to explicitely give the path to the compilers, for instance:

../configure --enable-mpi FC=/opt/OpenMPI/openmpi-1.4.3-intel/bin/mpif90 CC=/opt/OpenMPI/openmpi-1.4.3-intel/bin/mpicc CXX=/opt/OpenMPI/openmpi-1.4.3-intel/bin/mpic++

and changing the path accordingly. First check that mpif90, mpicc and mpic++ are available in your directory.

Also, if you're compiling on a cluster or something alike, you might need to load the open-mpi module.

Thank you so much for all the help by the way. I'm still trying to make this work though unfortunately.
When I provide the flags that you specified it breaks as soon as it gets to the C compiler.

==============================================================================
=== C support ===
==============================================================================

checking for mpicc... /usr/local/bin/mpicc
checking for gcc... mpicc
checking whether the C compiler works... yes
checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out
checking for suffix of executables...
checking whether we are cross compiling... configure: error: in `/home/clark/rosbaldeston/precompile/abinit/builddir':
configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs.

Any Ideas?

Please have a look at config.log to get more info on the failure and check that the Intel scripts iccvars.sh & ifortvars.sh (replace extension by ".csh" if you use a C-shell) have been run before compiling.

More details can be found e.g. here: http://forum.abinit.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1013&p=3266&hilit=ifortvars#p3266
